As of 2000, the population was 57,663. The U.S. Census Bureau 2005 estimate for the county is 64,747 . Its county seat is Fernandina Beach, Florida.
Nassau County was established from St. Johns County in 1824 and named for the Nassau Sound, which separates Nassau and Duval counties. The name comes from the capital of the Bahamas, which was named for the Duchy of Nassau, a former German state.
Nassau County is governed by the five-member Nassau County Board of County Commissioners, who are elected to four-year terms by the voters.
